IRS Extends Due Date for Federal Income Tax Filings and Payments to July 15

As a result of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency, the Treasury Department and IRS have extended the due date for the filing and payment of Federal income taxes otherwise due on April 15, 2020. The extended filing and payment date is July 15, 2020.

Here are some important points regarding the extension:

  • The extension of time to file and pay is available to all taxpayers and is automatic.
  • Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or contact the IRS to qualify for the extension of time to file and pay.
  • This extension applies to any 2019 federal tax return due at April 15, 2020.
  • This extension also applies to the first quarter 2020 estimate (if required), which is also due on April 15, 2020.
  • It does not extend the payment of the second quarter estimate due on June 15, 2020, if required.
  • Penalties and interest on any remaining unpaid balance will begin to accrue on July 16, 2020.
